Depression in Nigeria is indeed a topic to talk about. Not just because it is the 10th leading cause of death in the world but because it now seems to be the trend in Nigeria which is suffering from an economic recession evidenced by inflation and currency devaluation.
Depression is usually caused by over thinking. This excessive thinking can be due to certain things in our lives that are not going on the way it should be. This may be due to financial reasons, loss of a loved one, tragic illness or other related issues. Most times, it is due to certain conditions in our lives that we believe cannot be changed (even if there is a possibility of a change occurring) and we must live with forever till will die.
Therefore, to ease of the pain, people tend to do scary things just to put an end to the pain which they believe will be everlasting. They go to extent such as jumping into bodies of water, using rope to hang themselves till they die, taking poisons including overdose of certain drugs and in extreme cases using guns to shoot themselves in cold blood.
Now, this draws us to the question of the day, What is the cause of depression in Nigeria?
It is with no doubt that the present economic situation in Nigeria is one that has made a lot of people live on the breadline. While this is a reason why a lot of people are depressed in the Country, it still isn’t the major reason why people are depressed in the Country, Nigeria.
The major reason why people are depressed to the extent of committing suicide is because of the social media. We are actually the ones causing others to commit suicide knowingly or unknowingly.
The social media is full of people who post only the juicy part of their life for others to see neglecting the ugly sides. It takes a lot of maturity for someone to see his age mate in the same class driving a range rover while his father cannot even afford a bicycle. It also takes a lot of self control also to see and overlook such similar situations where it seems that you are 10 years behind your mate despite being in the same societal circle, age and environment.
While the social media has done a lot of good in providing a cost effective and fast means by which people can interact and pass useful information between themselves, I believe that this is one of the demerits of it. Keeping a moderate lifestyle on Facebook to an extent will help to checkmate this act of depression.
Moreover, I believe that it will not only help to prevent people from committing suicide due to depression as aforementioned but it will also help to reduce crime rate as showing off on social media has been linked to a lot of attacks by criminals in recent times and a common example is that of Kim Kardashian in Paris, France last year.
I believe with this, you have been able to see the major cause of depression in Nigeria.
